Bracing for a Storm
A lofty ranking with the World Boxing Council is firmly in the sights of one of Welsh boxings prize assets Ashley Brace, on Sanigar events latest promotion entitled Storm Warning.Saturday
22nd April and Ebbw Vale sports centre are the date and venue
Ebbw Vale Bantamweight Brace aptly nicknamed “storm” will contest the Vacant WBC international title which could land her significantly closer to a dream world title opportunity.
Opposing Brace will be Hungarian Alexandra Vlajk ,a pro since 2013 and carrying a record of 11-5 .Vlajk will be fighting in her 6th country and has already challenged for minor
titles at both Bantamweight and Flyweight. Female boxing is on a real high at the moment with Katie Taylor and Nicola Adams impressing fans nationwide, Ashley Brace will be looking to do likewise in front of a partisan home crowd.
Fresh from his first round Welsh title victory over Wrexhams Mike Jones, Mountain Ash super welterweight Tony Dixon will surely once again bring plenty of vocal support as he keeps busy on the 22nd. Dixon’s handlers will be looking to get their fighter in amongst the domestic top 10. A future British title opportunity is certainly not out of the question for the talented welshman who has bounced back well since losing to Paddy Gallagher.
Another man who is being linked to title opportunities is Pontypridd’s Jermaine Asare. The man from Ponty has came back very well from an early career setback at the hands of Eric Mokonzo. Asares opponent on the night boasting a record of 8 wins from 16 contests is Stoke on Trent’s Chris Nixon,a man who was outpointed by Asare on the Welshman’s pro debut. Jermaine didn’t have it all his own way though and nixon will be coming to South Wales in an attempt to even the score.
Another Darren Wilson Trained fighter also appears on the bill. Cardiffs Talented JJ Evans will look to take his record to 5 wins from 5 contests when he goes up against Stourbridge tough guy Kevin Mccauley, a man who’s record reads 13-139-11. Evans seemed to be slightly harsh on himself after coming through a testing 4 round contest last time out against William Warbuton, a fighter that is always capable of springing an upset.I thought Evans used his skills very nicely against the tough come forward Warbuton. The Cardiffian will have to employ similar tactics against Mccauley who although doesn’t win many has racked up a wealth of experience against a long list of fighters that have gone all the way to the top in the super welterweight division.
Also looking to claim a perfect 5-0 record at storm warning is Merthyr Tydfil lightweight Gavin”double G” Gwynn. The extremely likeable Gwynn boxed very nicely indeed to tame Jamie Quinn in his last bout. Gwynn won every round and its clear to see the great strides he is making whilst training with Tony Borg at the famed St Josephs gym in Newport. There are some mouth watering match ups to be made domestically at the weight, so if Gwynn comes through unscathed expect his handlers to move the merthyr man towards at least a welsh title shot in the future.
Welsh amateur star Ricky Rowlands did as he pleased in his professional debut taking a 40-36 victory over Paul Cummings last month. Always a tricky assignment getting that first bout without the vest over with and Rowlands team have rightly decided to get their man back out as soon as possible.A large contingent of fans journeyed down to Merthyr to support Ricky last time out and he’s definely one tipped to do very well in the professional ranks
A huge heart, as well as ability is required to go far in professional sport and thats exactly what Swanseas Kristian Touze possess as yet again he donates part of his purse to local charities. The two beneficiaries of Kristians generosity this time are Demi Jones and Marissa Warbuton, both of whom are sadly battling serious illnesses Make no mistake about it though, the charity stops on fight night for “toozey” who put in an excellent display of boxing to subdue the much heavier Adam Bannister in his last fight. The Swansea southpaw will be confident he can move to 3-0 in a talent laden Domestic lightweight division.
A spot on the big Cardiff motorpoint arena show on the 26th May awaits Cardiffs Nathan Thorley if he can negotiate his way past Aberystwyth Trier Jamie Ambler. Thorley
hasn’t fought for a year and is looking to build more momentum with 2 fights in a short space of time. Ambler should be the perfect opponent for Nathan to get back
into the ring and shake off some ring rust. The Aberystwyth light heavy has been in with a who’s who of the division and was the opponent debut opponent of a certain Tony Bellew. He’s certainly picked up a wealth of experience along the way and I’m sure Thorley will appreciate some rounds before setting his targets on the bigger names at the weight.
There you have it, yet another quality show put together by Sanigar Events. Featuring a lady in Ashley Brace many are saying is destined for the top, plus our Welsh boxing stars of the future looking to emulate the likes of Nathan Cleverley, the Selby brothers, Liam Williams and of course Joe Calzaghe.
