Welsh Boxing Finals LIVE Online For First Time In Its History

Welsh Boxing Finals LIVE online for first time in its history

For many Welsh amateur boxers winning the converted red Welsh vest and the title of Senior Welsh Boxing Champion will be the pinnacle of their boxing careers.

After all they will be following in the footsteps of Welsh sporting legends such as Howard Winstone and Joe Calzaghe to name two who won multiple Welsh senior titles. For a small selected few the Welsh senior title has been the first footnote of their career on the way to becoming a World Champion.

For many years I would look forward to watching the BBC broadcast of the Welsh Senior Finals, but year on year the coverage would be reduced and then cut completely. The powers that be that controlled BBC Wales decided that that our historic Welsh Senior Boxing championships was not important enough to be broadcast on television.

This is something that has always bothered me and when in 2015 I was in a position to do something about it I did. At the time I was working as a freelance sports reporter at the new TV channel Made in Cardiff TV and I successfully lobbied the channel bosses to show the 2015 Welsh finals. I am proud to say that every round and every punch of the 2015 Welsh finals were shown on TV on a delayed broadcast.

While the broadcast was not perfect it was a start, and I was told by a channel insider it received great viewing figures.  But unfortunately after a change of management at Made in Cardiff TV the Senior Finals were once again shunned without any reason.

Welsh amateur boxing went through a number of well publicised turbulent years after the 2015 finals and in 2017 Alasdir McIntyre was appointed as Interim Chief Operating Officer. After a number of meetings myself and Alasdir started working towards getting the 2018 Senior Finals broadcast whether it be online or on TV.

It’s been a long road but on April 7th the 2018 Welsh Senior Finals can be watched live online from anywhere in the world for a charge of £3.50 with myself and ex professional boxer and now trainer Chris Davies on live commentary from ringside.

Some might argue it should be free, other might say not everyone can watch online. But I would argue it’s a starting point and things can only get better if we build on this and its certainly an improvement on the TV blackout that the finals has received since the BBC decided to stop broadcasting the annual event.
